![]() Ten Simple Web Design Principles by: BJ Novack Website design has become so complex, with scripting, and dynamic content and pulling content from RSS and ATOM feeds and Ajax enhancement and ad rotation and . . . and . . . and . . . I’ve got a sticky note right on the lower right corner of my monitor. On it are four letters. K-I-S-S A glance at those four letters reminds me that there are many people who surf the web who have no clue what all the above stuff means. So I have to Keep It Simple, Stupid! I have to make sure that my website designs function no matter what the skill level happens to be of the person who is using the page. And any person doing web building, whether you’re a hot New York Web Design Company or a one-woman web design boutique in East Jibippy PA better remember these ten simple website design principles. Each web page must have its purpose clearly stated. Web Navigation must be clearly visible and easy to use. Avoid clutter, distraction, and flashing/moving objects, and make things easy to find. Business websites should have contact information easily visible. Not everyone has broadband. Design it SLIM, and dialup users will love you. Bells and whistles may be fun, but if a gadget or page element doesn’t add necessary functionality, don’t use it. Not everyone can see well, so make the text contrast enough against the background, and run the page through a “colorblind filter” (http://colorfilter.wickline.org/) to check usability. Because not everyone sees well, keep the text scalable, don’t use fixed pixel or point sizes. Keep page lengths “bite size”, no more than two page-downs. ALWAYS remember that the page user can override almost anything you do. Does your design scale and/or degrade well? These ten simple website design principles can make the difference between a page that’s easy to use and a page that surfers will click away from before it even finishes loading. About The Author BJ Novack runs a web design boutique for small businesses and non-profit organizations, specializing in up to date, search engine friendly, templated, client-managed sites. http://kickasswebdesign.com.

![]() Creating a Website (NEW!) - So you have decided you want to create a website online? Good for you, joining what seems to be literally every other men, woman, kid and dog that has also created their own piece of real estate in cyberspace. Recently there was an article published in a major newspaper that cited research and various statistics on the how much internet usage and the number of websites have increased in past years. One of these that stood out was the fact the number of websites online has more than doubled since just 2002 which is quite astounding. This article aims to discuss some of the ways to go about getting a personal or business site up and running online – in a way that is the most cost effective and suitable for your needs. While perhaps being most suited at the newcomers and lesser experienced at web design it may benefit users of from all backgrounds. Please read on for more information... How to Choose a Domain Name - The complexities of owning an online business involve practical decisions, and they extend all the way to your domain name. Believe it or not, the right domain name can be the most critical marketing decision you make for your online business venture to thrive. Depending on how big or small your business is, and its operating budget, affects the decision of how to choose your domain name. If you have a large budget and you want to specifically market your brand, it is a good idea to have a brand name in your domain. For example, MountainDew.Com is an off-shoot of the Coca-Cola Co. Specific information about MountainDew is found at that Web site rather than using the broad-based CocaCola.com Web site. A smaller budget means you should use a keyword for your domain name. Let’s say you own a small-scale flower business. Perhaps your domain... Online Business Plan - Learn the essentials to an online business plan. When starting an online business, possibly the most important plan you can have is your web site plan summary. We will show you important questions you should ask yourself Before you start your online business, and walk you through everything you will need to know in order to create an online business plan. Web Copy Writing Basics - Think of all the web sites you’ve visited for whatever reason, only to leave immediately, because you were confused, bored or because there simply was not a clear message and a call to action. Other sites of little interest are warm and friendly but, again, leave you exiting in bewilderment, asking yourself why the site was truly existed. Most web sites are designed with the idea of selling a product or service. Few, however, explain what the product or service is, how it will benefit the customer, while offering a call to action that makes people want to buy. These are the three simple features of good Internet copy writing – the kind of writing that helps people make sales... Save Money when designing a web site - Taking the leap onto the world wide web is a necessary step for many small businesses. Maybe they need a simple web presence were visitors can find out more information about a company and what it offers. Maybe they need a more sophisticated presence that requires an online store to sell their products. Most small businesses operate on a shoe string budget so saving money when designing a website is vital. The first question to be asked is who should design the site?...
